CPU Failure Rates Are Low: Exactly How Low Are They?

When buying a new processor, reliability matters.

A CPU is one of the most important parts of any PC, so it is completely understandable that customers want confidence before installing one. Whether you are upgrading an existing system or building a new PC, you want reassurance that the processor you are buying is reliable, genuine, and properly supported.

The good news is simple: modern AMD CPU failure rates are low.

No electronic component can ever be guaranteed to have a 0% failure rate, but real-world system builder data shows that CPU failures are uncommon. For the vast majority of customers, a brand new processor should install, run, and perform exactly as expected.

At PC Tec UK, we sell brand new AMD Ryzen processors and back them with our own 1 year warranty, giving you added peace of mind from day one.

What the reliability data shows

Tom’s Hardware recently covered Puget Systems’ 2025 reliability report, which looked at component failure data from systems the company builds and tests.

For consumer desktop processors, AMD Ryzen 9000 processors were reported at a 2.52% failure rate. AMD X3D processors performed even better, with a reported 1.51% failure rate.

Put simply, the overwhelming majority of processors in that dataset did not fail.

Using those reported AMD failure rates:

AMD X3D processors: 1.51%
That works out as roughly 151 reported failures out of 10,000 units. In other words, around 9,849 out of 10,000 units did not fail in that dataset.

AMD Ryzen 9000 processors: 2.52%
That works out as roughly 252 reported failures out of 10,000 units. In other words, around 9,748 out of 10,000 units did not fail in that dataset.

That is the key point for customers: AMD CPU failures can happen, but they are uncommon. Even the higher AMD figure in this report still shows that the vast majority of processors operated as expected.

Why the figures should be read properly

Failure rate data always needs context.

Puget Systems is a specialist system builder, not a complete picture of every AMD CPU sold worldwide. Tom’s Hardware also notes that publicly available failure rate data from one company should not be treated as representative of every retailer or every system.

That context is important, but it does not make the data useless. It shows that when processors are handled, tested, configured, and installed properly, genuine CPU failure rates remain low.

Earlier Tom’s Hardware coverage, also based on Puget Systems data, reported that shipped systems using AMD Ryzen 5000 and Ryzen 7000 processors had a failure rate of a little over 4%. Even that figure means more than 9,500 out of 10,000 processors did not fail in that specific dataset.

So the message is not “CPUs never fail.” The real message is stronger and more useful: AMD CPU failures are uncommon, and when you buy from the right place, you have support if something does go wrong.

CPUs are generally reliable components

Compared with many other PC parts, processors are generally very reliable.

They have no moving parts, no pump, no fan, and no mechanical wear mechanism. Once installed correctly in a compatible system, a CPU will usually run reliably for many years.

When a system has problems after a CPU upgrade, the processor is not always the cause. Other common causes can include:

  • An outdated BIOS
  • Motherboard compatibility issues
  • Memory instability
  • Poor cooler mounting
  • Bent motherboard socket pins
  • Power supply issues
  • Incorrect installation

This is why buying from a retailer that understands processors matters.

At PC Tec UK, CPUs are not just another product category buried among thousands of listings. Processors are our focus. That means clearer product information, more direct communication, and proper support if you need help.

Why buying brand new matters

Used processors can look attractive on price, but they come with more uncertainty.

You may not know how the CPU was handled, how it was stored, whether it was overclocked, whether it was exposed to poor cooling, or whether it has already been through installation issues in another system.

A brand new CPU gives you a much cleaner starting point.

When you buy from PC Tec UK, you are buying a brand new AMD Ryzen processor with clear product information, careful packaging, tracked delivery, and direct support from a small UK business that actually focuses on CPUs. That makes a difference.

Buy with confidence

AMD CPU failures are rare, but peace of mind still matters.

Your purchase is covered by the PC Tec UK 1 year warranty, so if a genuine fault develops within that period, we will deal with it properly.

Every order is carefully packed, shipped with tracking, and supported with direct communication before and after purchase.

That is the PC Tec UK difference.
